Masculinized Females (Female Pseudohermaphrodites)

May 20th, 2005

Masculinized females possess ovaries and are female by genetic sex (XX), but the external genitalia are not those of a normal female. Of all infants with ambiguous genitalia, 40-45% have adrenal hyperplasia. Rarer causes of female pseudohermaphroditism are excess maternal androgen caused by drug ingestion, tumor secretion, or possibly placental aromatase deficiency.
